and take over the crown of the next Fa Dan?
[Em’s note: For the non-Cantonese readers, ‘Fa Dan’ is the title given to the leading female cast members, originating

The Next Fa Dan?
Article By Mich
So what makes a TVB Fa Dan?
Actresses like Jessica Hsuan, Ada Choi and Gigi Lai are the top names in TVB dramas. They have strong roots in TVB and definitely shows that are remembered by all. We will always remember them for either a role well played or a character that remains in our hearts. For example, Gigi Lai and Sheren Tang shot instantly to the top seats after their cunning roles in TVB’s most popular show in 2004, ‘War and Beauty’ after which, the audience remembers them by their character names of ‘Yuk Ying' and 'Yu Fei’!
The rising female stars of TVB
Myolie Wu Hang Yee
When Myolie first joined TVB, she was given roles in shows like ‘A Colourful Life’ and ‘Eternal Happiness’. These were not breakthrough roles and I did not really realise her existence then. It was not until Golden Faith when she proved herself by playing the unforgettable role of ‘Yin Yin’. In 2002, she won the Most Improved Female Actress award at TVB’s Anniversary Show and since then, she had been cast into shows such as 2003’s grand production, ‘Triumph in the Skies’, where many remember her as the adorable ‘So Yee’.
So what makes her a possible TVB Fa Dan?
TVB has been promoting her a lot recently by casting her into shows continuously. Since the beginning of 2005, series in which she plays the lead have been aired in Hong Kong. In ‘Lost in the Chamber of Love’, she outshines Michelle Ye, whom has more experience than her. Not long afterwards, ‘Scavenger’s Paradise’, in which she co stars with top actor, Roger Kwok, was aired. Her new show with Joe Ma, ‘The Gateau Affairs’ will be airing in June. Watching her constantly on the screen, and with each performance getting better and better, how can we leave her out as TVB’s next Fa Dan?
Tavia Yeung Yi
Tavia’s career route began after graduating from TVB’s 13th Acting Academy in 1998. Appearing in old productions like ‘Detective Investigation Files IV’ and ‘Dragon Love’, Tavia started out as a minor. Slowly she worked her way up and got supporting roles in shows like ‘Golden Faith’ and ‘Eternal Happiness’. Tavia has had a humble TVB beginning and standing where she is today as a lead actress, she has indeed made a great achievement.
So what makes her a possible TVB Fa Dan?
With the number of series that Tavia has been starring in recently, it is obvious that TVB is pushing her upwards, hoping that she will connect with the audience. She was cast in ‘Yummy Yummy’, a Singapore and Hong Kong collaboration where many familiar faces like Charmaine Sheh were involved. 'Yummy' is a grand production of the year and definitely one of the shows most hyped about. She has garnered many fans in the course of her career route and has proven to everyone that she has what it takes to be a top leading actress.
Bernice Liu Bik Yee
The winner of Miss Chinese International 2001, Bernice was signed on to TVB and cast on TVB’s long running comedy, ‘Virtues of Harmony’. She won the audience's heart with her character, ‘Princess Sam Tim’, and was given the nickname as ‘Princess’. After saying goodbye to the cast, Bernice carried on to star in shows like ‘Love Bond’ and grand production ‘Healing Hands III’, set for release in the coming months. The audience loves her and I admit I’m an avid fan of her too.
So what makes her a possible TVB Fa Dan?
When Bernice first joined TVB, her acting was not as good and she had problems with Cantonese. But since watching her performance in the new show, ‘Love Bond’, she has proven to everyone that she has a talent in acting and is no longer the girl we first saw in ‘Virtues of Harmony’. I believe that in no time to come, more people will become her fans. She definitely deserves an award in this year’s TVB Anniversary Show!
Leila Tong Ling
Leila started out with small roles in shows like ‘Burning Flame II’ and ‘Take My Word For It’, before heading on to roles in 2003’s most watched series, ‘Square Pegs’ as Jessica Hsuan’s younger sister. She had been a child actress since she was young but her recent performances in shows like ‘The Last Breakthrough’ and ‘Twin Of Brothers’ has shown that she is an experienced actress, despite her youthful looks!
So what makes her a possible TVB Fa Dan?
Leila's cute looks are well received by the audience and though she looks like a newbie to acting, she is good at crying especially in ‘The Last Breakthrough’. She has improved a lot in that show and is definitely a contender for the Most Improved Actress Award. We will be seeing more of her soon in shows like ‘Ten Brothers’ and ‘The New Legend of Ah Wong’. I believe with more breakthrough roles, she will become a top actress with a show to lead on her own.
Nancy Wu Ding Yan
The winner of TVB Magazine’s 3rd Cover Girl competition, Nancy started to act in TVB and was given small roles in shows like ‘Seed Of Hope’ as a nurse with one scene, before heading on to act as Joey Yung’s sister in ‘Not Just A Pretty Face’. It was that role that made me notice her but it was not until ‘Twin Of Brothers’ where she had proven that was really ‘Not Just A Pretty Face’ , but a young actress who is talented and ready to take on greater roles.
So what makes her a possible TVB Fa Dan?
She definitely has the looks and potential to make it to the top. TVB has been promoting her more and more, giving her roles continuously. She will be appearing in TVB’s upcoming release, ‘Ten Brothers’. Recently, she has been cast into ‘The Simple Soothsayer’ alongside Raymond Lam, Frankie Lam and Tavia Yeung. She plays one of the main roles in the series and it is obvious that TVB is pushing her higher each time.
Linda Chung Ka Yan
Hailing from Canada, Linda was crowned Miss Chinese International in 2004. Following Bernice Liu’s footsteps, she was cast into ‘Virtues of Harmony II’ to replace the absence of Bernice and Frankie Lam’s characters. Her character, Ah Lam, made her recognizable to the audience. Not long after, the VOH cast parted ways and Linda was cast into shows like ‘Always on Standby’ starring Ekin Cheng and Charmaine Sheh.
So what makes her a possible TVB Fa Dan?
Although she is new and has few shows to her name, she has indeed captivated some fans that have shown her lots of support. TVB has been promoting her a lot and hope that she will make it big. I believe in the near future, with a breakthrough role, she will make it higher to the top and one day lead in her own drama.
