Grand Finale Week for Jang Geum
The much anticipated finale to the blockbuster "Jewel in the Palace" aired this week and with the ending to the series that has been around for what seems like forever, there is an element of excitement but also sadness that such a great show has to come to an end. For Kelly Chen, who sings the theme song and is herself a great fan, she was attending a show in Genting, so she was unable to watch the ending, but TVB had provided her with a copy beforehand and she was very pleased with how the story wraps up. Kelly says she will miss hearing her song on TV every evening, but she hopes that people will still sing her song at the Karaoke boxes.
Kelly's singing partner Bowie Lam has been filming for "Always on Standby" recently, but has been rushing home after work to tune in. He has offered the suggestion to TVB that they should re-run "War and Beauty" opposite "Jewel" to make a comparison.

When I go out with him, people only say hello to him and not to me any more, but he is very cute and brings me luck."
After finishing filming for "Disappearance", Bernice has been out and about making money: "I have to make money to pay for my son (ie her dog)! I want to find a mate for him because I don't want him to be bored."

All About Men like these
Ron Ng, Raymond Lam and Moses Chan tok part in an autograph session for their new compilation album "All About Men" and several hundred fans were present at the crowded venue. Among them, Ron's fans were in the majority, proving his current popularity. Ron was wearing a deep V top and during the event, the female MC kept commenting on his body, making him rather embarrassed: "I rarely wear deep V tops, don't keep looking at my clothes please! I'm going to kick you off the stage soon!"
As for rumours that Ron and Raymond have fallen out, Ron insists that Raymond is still his good friend and their friendship has never changed and they call each other every evening. Raymond laughs: "Yeah, I don't like him! The way we communicate is to take the mickey out of each other, I hope you won't write things the wrong way."
Moses has been criticised for his weak singing lately, but he says seemingly relaxed: "This is my first time and I know my own weaknesses. All the guys in the album are masters, so for me I have already won by being given the chance to record."

Miss Hong Kong 2005 Second Interviews
The "2005 Miss Hong Kong Pageant" final will take place on 20th August this year and after a round of first interviews last week, around sixty contestants were invited back for a second audition at TKO TVB City. All those with thick thighs and wide waists were ousted and the sexy dresses were put aside for a more sophisticated casual look.
However, there were some who wore black dresses and under the bright lights of the press flashes, this created a transparency effect on them.
Among those invited back were some girls with great figures and tall stances and familiar faces from the first interview included the "E-cup Lactation Cow", "Love Bomb", previous modelling contestant Ng Hoi Tung, designer William Tang's niece Tang Yi Wai (Ivy) and an 'Angie Ho Lookalike' who had been snapped snogging her boyfriend in public by the tabloids.
Although they all kept quiet and did not respond to the press questions, the funny thing was when they went to the toilet, they were as noisy as housewives in the markets. Some even scolded the reporters, saying: "Taking photos in the toilets, I don't know what there is to photograph!"
Among this year's judges are Eric Tsang and Sofie Rahman and after seeing the girls, Eric said that the quality was fantastic, with many girls confident in their oral responses and in acting potential. Eric says: "The girls this year are pretty good, many of them are clear about their reasons for taking part and are not totally clueless, so it is difficult to choose. The quality is very balanced and meets the standards, I have chosen the best ones for my group, but on the night, we can only choose three."
As for Sofie, she says that in the past it was her being chosen, so it is rather special for her to be the one choosing this time.
Producer Ho Siu Wai indicates: "This year, the format will be different as the forty contestants will be split into five groups led by Eric Tsang, Carol Cheng, Sofie Rahman, Aaron Kwok and Hacken Lee, who will test their skills in acting, sports, eloquence, dance and singing to select the top 15 plus the international contestants. The girls can choose their own ambition and their own judges, so it is very interactive."
Carol Cheng says that she feels that the quality this year is much better than last year: "The girls this year are very pretty and I have seen some of their swimwear tapes and their figures are pretty good too. At first the producer wanted me to look after the 'acting' section, but I wanted to do something different and I like doing sport, so I chose this instead. Apart from being beautiful and intelliegent, the contestants' physical healthiness is also important. Many of the girls do some sport and one is a very professional tennis player." Carol admits that it has been very difficult to judge this year.

Sammul Another Year Older
Over forty fans held a surprise birthday party for Sammul Chan earlier as he arrived at a venue to find a group of fans had made him a birthday cake and were all singing 'Happy Birthday' to him, giving him an unexpected celebration. Sammul says: "I didn't know my fans would hold a party for me and I thought I had to do some work, but it was a surprise party and this is a first time for me. Am I touched? They have supported me for so long now and I have never celebrated with them, so I was a little nervous, sweating and my heart was beating. I hope that I can celebrate with them every year and that there will be more and more people until we have to go to the stadium for the party!"
Asked about a birthday wish, Sammul says: "I hope that I can fulfil my wish of releasing an album and make my first music video. I have waited for a long time now, but it still hasn't happened. Apart from this, I hope I can change my car - the one I have in mind is a European car, but I haven't been to look yet."

Michael and Kenix Pair Up Once More
Screen lovers Michael Tao and Kenix Kwok were coupled up again as they attended an opening in Zhongshan after working together in "Love Bond". During the event, they also sung the theme song to "Love", making the fans very happy and ask when they would be releasing an album! Kenix says that since last year, she has been busy filming series non-stop and is currently shooting for "Mysteries of Sze Kung", so she thankful to the producer for giving her the time off to do this event. "Although I have been very busy, I have also been very lucky and had many offers for stage appearances and openings, so I am very happy." Kenix says that she had wanted to turn away some offers of series, but many of the offers she has had have been tailored especially for her and she can't bear to say no. Luckily she has taken some time to spend a few days with her husband Frankie Lam to celebrate their wedding anniversary earlier.

Sonija & Deric Love No More
The love affair between Sonija Kwok and Deric Wan has never really had much good press, with numerous reports of them splitting, always followed by one-sided denials. At a recent event in a shopping mall, Sonija has finally revealed that their relationship has ended and she has split from Deric.
Talking about how she relieves stress, Sonija says she goes out shopping and to the movies with her mother and playing at home with her dog and cat. When it was mentioned that dating was another way to relax, she said calmly: "I don't have a date! (Have you split with Deric?) Yes." With such a high profile relationship ending without any commotion, Sonija insists there was no conflict, but it just faded away. Asked whether they were amicable, Sonija says they are still friends. As for who suggested the split, Sonija refused to answer, saying it is her private matter and she is making this known because they had decided to reveal their relationship in the beginning, it is only proper for everyone to know that it is over. As for why they split, Sonija says: "Maybe because we are both so busy and didn't have time to see each other or date. (But you seemed so close before?) This is all in the past now. I don't want to date at the moment so I don't know if I will accept anyone else's advances."
As for whether she felt the negative press had influenced the ending of their relationship, Sonija says that there will be some effect, but she does not regret making their relationship public and she does not really care what other people think or write. At the moment she will continue to work hard and denies tht her relationship affected her career progression. She still has a year left of her contract with TVB and the company is very sincere in offering her a renewal already, so she has no plans to head elsewhere.

'Just Love' Promo
TVB will be airing new series "Just Love" next week, where Sunny Chan and Jessica Hsuan play husband and wife and the story tells of how the tradiotional roles are reversed as the wife works whilst the husband looks after the home and family. Moreover, there is a pre-nuptial agreement, where the husband agrees to keep to the ground rules after marriage.
Jessica appeared at a promotion for the show in a low cut denim dress, causing a stir not only among the press, but also with her co-stars, raising comments such as "Mind the Gap!". As she read out the details of the pre-nup, Lo Hoi Pang added: "With you dressed like that, anything is worth it!" As for her screen-husband Sunny, he exclaimed: "Wow, why are you dressed like that?". The pair then willingly agreed to be photographed sharing a kiss.
Jessica indicates that since she was young, she has not really liked babies because she finds them very noisy, especially on planes. However, after filming this show, meeting such well-behaved babies and getting to know the, this has made her more accepting towards them, but she still has to consider having her own very carefully because today's society is not good and she is worried about hardship after they are born. As for whether she has found herself a new boyfriend yet, she smiles: "My new boyfriend is Ah Wong! I have been filming every day for 'Legend of Ah Wong', so I am not thinking about love for now and even if there are offers of dates, I have to think carefully about accepting because I no longer believe in a dream home and family, things are not as they seem any more and I would rather be alone than have to go through a divorce." As for whether she has thought about having an IVF baby, she laughs:" I like mixed race babies because I find them very pretty, so I have thought about using the sperm from a foreigner, but I will not marry one, unless he is very Chinese-orientated. Using IVF is very irresponsible though, so I will not do this on these grounds."
Sunny was asked whether he was afraid his wife Ada To would be jealous about him kissing Jessica so much, but he laughed: "She (Jessica) is my wife! I am just getting into character!" He says that his wife will not be jealous because she understands this is just acting. Sunny also reveals that when he got married, they did not exchange rings because he wanted simplicity and did not want to put on a 'show' at his wedding. Legally, there is no obligation to exchange rings. Asked if he had to make it simple to this extreme, he smiled: "I have given her my whole body and my fortune, nothing else is important as long as we are together in spirit."
Sunny explains that his wife is currently writing script, doing stage shows and voice-overs for her art and not for money, making him very envious. Asked if he is also a work of art, he laughs: "Thank you! (Have you thought about having children?) Last week, I thought about having one this year, because I am not young now and my mother is still able to look after the baby. (Are you not going to look after it?) Definitely not, because I am worried that I will lose my pace. I hope to keep young and interesting. (Does your wife agree to having kids this year?) I have not discussed this with her yet, but I have a way of making my dreams come true, just like the year that I wanted to get married and have my own business and it all came true. If there is good news, I will let you all know."
The cast members of the show had to demonstrate how to cook and look after the baby, but Johnson Lee and Fiona Yuen put too much oil in the pan and set it on fire whilst frying fish. Also when they tried washing the baby's head, they made the three babies cry non-stop, so this event was called off.

Children, please ...
Ron Ng, Sammul Chan, Michael Miu and Fiona Sit attended a promotion earlier for "The Academy" and this was the first time that rumoured enemies Sammul and Fiona appeared together at an 'Academy' event, but Sammul showed no mercy as he fired insult after insult at her, despite the duo insisting that they were 'best friends'.
Ron was the most popular among the fans, but Michael was not weak as his wife Jamie Chik and good friend Lee San San were there to lend their support. When the cast introduced themselves on the stage, Sammul felt that Fiona was saying too much and he stopped her mid-speech, saying: "Stop! That's enough, this isn't your personal autograph show." Later, when they were asked about their feelings, Fiona said she had nothing to say, to which Sammul replied: "So why don't you sing your song 'Little Black and Dog' (actual song name is 'Little Black and Me'). Fiona seemed a little put out by this and said: "My next song is called 'Boys are like me'." Sammul was ready with a reply though, saying: "I know, but I didn't want to promote it for you!". Despite the banter on the stage, Sammul pointed out to the reporters that he and Fiona are 'best friends' and that she had given him a copy of her album.

"Jewel in the Palace" is No 1
The grand finale week for smash hit "Jewel in the Palace" has rocketed the show into television history as the Sunday evening ratings for the final episode gained average ratings of 47 points, peaking at a massive 49 points, breaking the all time TV ratings record for a series, toppling the average 47 peak 48 of "War of the Genders" set by Carol Cheng and Dayo Wong in 2000 and in all TV shows, ranking only second after the 50 points achieved by last year's Real Madrid vs Hong Kong soccer match. In real terms, this meant that nearly half the population of Hong Kong, some 3,055,000 viewers tuned in to watch the happy ending for Jang Geum.
The show has been doing extremely well all along, since it began airing in January this year and in its final week, the averages during the week rose to around 40 points, peaking at 44 and even drawing up the ratings for shows before and after it, as Saturday's episode of "Minutes to Fame" capitalised on this and reached an all time high of 36 points as a result. The special presentation show to wrap up the series "All About Jang Geum" that was aired straight after the final episode also gained a massive 44 point average (peak 46 points), proving that the viewers had still not seen enough!
Since the show began airing, there have been constant queries as to whether there will be an official Cantonese version of the show available to buy on VCD or DVD, but unfortunately, TVB are not able to publish this due to licensing issues. As a result, TVB have been smart when negotiating their next Korean drama release "Hur Jun" and TVBI will be releasing the show in stages with Chinese subtitles, TVB Cantonese dubbing and the original Korean soundtrack to buy on VCD.

Don't Mind Us, You Carry On...
Rumoured couple Bernice Liu and Moses Chan were guests at the opening of a shopping mall yesterday, but despite the presence of the press, they continued to flirt with each other in public! Bernice asked Moses if he had kept the rosette from the ribbon for good luck and when he said he hadn't, Bernice laughed: "You can't blame this Westerner, he doesn't know about these things!"
Afterwards, they went for a walk around the shopping mall and caused a commotion as the crowds gathered around them. The most amusing thing was how the MC called Moses by the wrong name on two occasions, even calling him "Chan Ka Ho", but Moses said he didn't hear her. Asked if their fee was one fee or two, he laughs that this job was taken by the company and the fee is satisfactory. He adds that many people ask them both to appear at events as a couple and they will be together at other future appearances.
Bernice was wearing a skirt with a rather high slit in it, but she laughed that she was not worried about revealing herself because she had put something on underneath just in case. She was more worried that if she wore a long skirt, it would have been blown up in the wind.

Big Strapping Fire Fighters Delight Mandy
The "International Fire Fighters Championships" is a bi-annual sporting event for fire fighting crews from all over the world and a special fundraising and inaugoration event for the 2006 championship was held earlier, attended by the event's 'Promotional Ambassador' Jackie Chan and 'Youth Ambassadors' that included Ron Ng, Raymond Lam, Wong He, Mandy Cho, Iris Wong, Winnie Shum, Shawn Yue, Yan Ng, Ella Koon, Renee Tai, Sam Chan, 2R, Bobo Chan and Paul Chun's son Keung Man Kit.
With many burly fire fighters present at the event, Mandy commented that many girls find a feeling of security with a fireman, so when asked if she would choose a fireman as a boyfriend, she says: "I daren't be so greedy, but he ought to have the security of a fireman." When it was mentioned that the standard of the Miss Hong Kong contestants this year is quite high, Mandy says: "Yes, I am interested in meeting this group of successors, but I will leave it to my assistant to arrange. (Any advice for them?) The most important thing is to be yourself and not to try too hard to copy anyone. You don't have to be Michelle Reis or Maggie Cheung, just need to have your own aura."
Ron supported his "Academy" co-stars Fiona Sit and Sammul Chan, saying that there is no animoscity between them after the earlier exchange on the stage of a promotional event: "I didn't see anything, but all the youngsters in the show play around like that. If we had fallen out, how could we stand each other for four or five months, three meals a day? Fiona has thrown insults at me, but it is not malicious and I know it is just a joke."

Fiona & Leila are Good Girls
Fiona Yuen and Leila Tong were guests at the opening of a slimming and beauty centre in Shatin earlier and showed off their great figures wearing low cut and strappy dresses. Fiona says she has been the spokesperson for the company for three years now and shot a set of swimsuit ads earlier for them. Asked if wearing a one-piece puts her a little way behind the wow factor of the other ads, using snakes and bikinis, Fiona says that as long as it shows off your curves and the feeling is healthy, then it is okay. She wore a two-piece swimsuit for an earlier ad and this is her limit.
Leila did not need to wear a swimsuit for her ads, but she says she will consider it if the company requests, but she will not wear a bikini because she is rather reserved and she will not even wear it to go swimming in, even when there are other braver girls at the pool who do. She says: "I feel that they look very pretty. I have worn one before when I was abroad, because this is very common there and no-one will take a second look at you."

Return of the Minute Famers
Bernice Liu and Vincent Kok were guest judges on "Minutes to Fame" earlier in the first of the 'Second Chance' shows that allowed previous losers to give it another try. As they had been voted back by viewers and all had previous experience, most of the contestants lasted over sixty seconds. Two of them pulled their pants down mid-performance to reveal their boxer shorts and one even went as far as showing off a plastic bum. Bernice praised the high standard of their performance, saying: "To think of so many ways of performing in such a short time is difficult and there is a lot of pressure on the stage, so I couldn't bear to ring the bell."
Hosts Hacken Lee and Joey Leung admit to watching a similar show on a competitor's channel and Hacken says: "The format is very similar. (Are you worried this will affect ratings?) This is beyond my control, it is up to the viewers." With the news that "Minutes" has been extended by a further 16 episodes, will Hacken continue to host the show? He says he is yet to decide because the doctors have advised him not to do too much hosting to avoid damage to his voice.

Anne & Michael in Zhongshan
Anne Heung and Michael Tao were in Zhongshan earlier opening a new housing development and holding an autograph session before doing a stage performance in the evening. Anne says that China and Hong Kong has just finished airing "Love Bond", so that fans are very welcoming, so despite bringing 300 photos with her, she ran out very quickly and had to sign the programmes instead. However, the event was too chaotic and the security guards had to step in to protect her, but Anne says she was still touched in her sensitive regions and she called to the guards to be more careful. She says that she doesn't think it was intentional, but she had to shout out to be on the safe side.

Fiona Sit Suggests Disharmony
With vicious rumours of animoscity between Fiona Sit and Sammul Chan on the set of "The Academy" followed by endless banter between Fiona and Sammul and even Ron Ng during the promotional activity, these have always been followed by vehement denials. However, on a radio interview yesterday, Fiona dropped hints at some disharmony between her and her male co-stars.
In response to the digs, Fiona says: "I don't mind, everyone says I am always having the mickey taken, but they don't print the abuse I give back to them. This is the way that young people communicate and it is very relaxed and not as serious as the press makes ou. We are all OK as friends. (Have you had arguments?) People who know me know I don't like arguing. so I will not do these ugly things and in any case there is nothing between us, so there is no reason for arguments. My surprise after the show was that I had made so many great friends, so even leaving out Ron and Sammul, we still keep in touch and have meals. Everything is harmonious and not complicated."
However, through her words, Fiona appears to have hinted at something by suggesting that Ron and Sammul were 'left out'.

Gigi on Beauty & Aging
Gigi Lai, Niki Chow, Isabella Leung, Balia Chan and Leila Tong were guests at the "Summer Skin Beauty Awards", where they were presented with a variety of awards for their skin. Gigi is also a spokesperson for a red wine based beauty product, but she was quite covered up and did not catch the attentions as much as supermodel Balia. However, Gigi was unperturbed by this, saying she will not be sexy just for the sake of it and would rather choose clothes for their beauty. Talking of her tips for skincare, she says that although she likes swimming, she will always wear factor 100 sun lotion to avoid becoming tanned. As for comments from Moses Chan that she is some kind of 'spirit' because her skin has been so good for so many years, Gigi says that this is because she was young when she entered the industry, so she isn't actually that old: "Everyone knows I am 33 years old and many people think that as soon as you hit the thirties, it is very frightening, but times have changed and even into the forties, there is no problem. Maggie Cheung (Man Yuk) and Carina Lau are in their forties now, but they still look great and Siu Fong Fong is even more of a model example. I feel that age to a woman is not important, it is intellect, intelligence, etiquette and eloquence that is what makes people like you. Of course if you add beauty, then this will have the men at your feet." She says that her career has just taken off, so she can continue for another ten years. As for marriage, this is not up to her, so it is hard to say. She has more control of her career and says that she probably will not do this job when she is married because the irregular hours will be detrimental to her relationship.
Niki has signed a renewal for her beauty product contract and talking of her skincare regime, she says that she does not use much make up. Earlier, she filmed a movie, where she did not have to make up or set her hair, starting work as soon as she arrived and the director praised her for a great result. She feels that for a girl, it is important to be presentable 'in the flesh'.

Sam Chan to Play his Father
Cheng Pei-pei, Marsha Yuen and Sam Chan will be appearing in a musical production "Moonlit Night in Hong Kong" (translated title) from 19th May for three nights at the Yuen Long Theatre and they took part in a promotional event at a radio station. To prepare for this show, Marsha has been writing music for the first time, saying that she has tried to write music before, but it has always been unfruitful, but this time she has completed the task, with co-star Ursula Wong writing the lyrics.
Sam says that there is a scene in the show where he has to play his father Shek Sau, but he doesn't want to put too much pressure on himself, so he has told his dad not to come and support him, but his father has insisted on bringing all their friends and relatives to watch his final performance, so this will be a challenge for him.
For mothers day, Pei-pei says that she is busy rehearsing for the show, but she hopes to spend some time having lunch with her children. Marsha says her mother doesn't like receiving flowers, so she will not be sending any. Pei-pei says that she loves to receive cards from her children because she can take them out and read them from time to time and it is very comforting. Sam's mother is the opposite of Pei-Pei and likes to receive flowers, so Sam has prepared some fresh flowers for her as a gift.

Joe Ma will be heading out to Beijing to film shortly and with a busy time ahead, he has just taken some time out to visit Australia's Gold Coast on vacation. On his three day visit, time was tight, so he chose some special places to visit, including Dream World, Tangalooma Island and the Warner Studios. He says that he found many childhood memories at Warner and bought a lot of Batman memorabilia there. He also met a lot of Chinese tourists there, who asked to be photographed with him.
As for Tangalooma Island, during the one-hour journey, Joe took the time to take in the sunshine. He says: "On the island, the happiest thing for me was to feed the dolphins with the trainer, who told me that in the evening, they would return automatically for the food." Also, in order to see the siberian tiger, kangaroo and lizards, he also went to the Dream World animal park, where he spent a day with the kangaroos.

Raymond back on the Tan
TVB's new series "Simple Soothsayer" held its costume fitting earlier and cast members including Raymond Lam, Frankie Lam, Tavia Yeung and Anne Heung were present. After spending some time in the sunbed, Raymond was rather flushed and was called 'Kwan Kung' after the red faced Chinese god, whilst Frankie reminded everyone about the time when he was branded 'weakling' after the charity running event. After developing a fondness for the UV lamps, it was mentioned to him about Sherming Yiu's earlier mishap where she suffered burns from the treatment and he was rather shocked by this: "Although I am naked when I am tanning, I have never heard about sustaining injuries! I am not worried, I will just wear more lotion."
Talking of tanning on the beach, Raymond says: "I am afraid of the crowds or being spotted with a girl and then mistaken for dating. I would rather people write that I am gay because this is less threatening." He indicates that he knows a lot of gay friends: "Although I am not, but we can all still be friends." Anne reveals that she has had an amicable split with her boyfriend of 18 months because their personalities weren't right for each other.

"Healing Hands III" Sacrificed
TVB was scheduled to air medical drama "Healing Hands III" at the end of the month, but due to other influences resulting in the decision to air Korean Costume medical drama "Hur Jun - Medical Ethics", then in order to avoid a clash of subject matter, "Healing Hands" has been postponed and Moses Chan and Niki Chow's "The Gentle Crackdown" will begin airing instead on 23rd May. This decision has caused an outcry from Gigi Lai's fans, who have written to the press complaining. In response to this, Gigi urges her supporters to be patient, but thanks them for their support. She says that "Healing Hands" is a good show and although it has been held back, she will still be filming all the promotional clips, although male lead Lawrence Ng will not be available. TVB external affairs assistant chief Tsang Sing Ming says that they have also received a complaint from a viewer and he thanks the fans for their support for Gigi and TVB, but TVB has always scheduled by subject matter and "Healing Hands" will be shown at a more suitable time.

Joe in Oz
